Who invented silverpoint
Silverpoint was most commonly practiced during the Renaissance by such artists as Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Raphael, and is the ancestor of the modern graphite pencil. Silverpoint is a drawing instrument composed of a small, pointed metal tip, usually of silver, encased in a holder. Silverpoint is a unique and ancient drawing medium rarely practiced today except by a couple of hundred artists in the entire world. Metalpoint drawing is not an easy or forgiving art medium since once a drawing mark is made on the drawing surface, it cannot be erased - so any errors in the drawing are permanent! In the 17th century some fine artists continued using silverpoint on rare occasions. For example, Rembrandt made the portrait of his wife, Saskia, in 1633 using the metal-point technique. In the 19th century, metal-point media had once again gained the attention of fine artists. Rembrandt’s use of it and the expensive sheet of parchment gave Saskia’s portrait an air of something traditional or even old-fashioned. The delicacy of the silverpoint attests to her charm and to the happiness that Rembrandt found in the idea of marrying Saskia. Even in More than any previous artist, Leonardo made drawing a means of discovery, creative stimulation, and invention. He drew with all the common media of his day—silverpoint, pen, and brush. He expanded the range of some media—charcoal and chalk. And he developed something new—pastel. (See Drawing Materials.) One of the most creative draftsmen of any period, Leonardo left posterity an enormous number of drawings, in sharp contrast to his few paintings. Including drawings bound in his Illuminated manuscripts were created using delicate, natural materials, such as gold leaf, silverpoint, vellum, and bright, mineral-derived paints. Each manuscript was carefully illustrated, gilded, and written by hand, requiring a high degree of craftsmanship. Dürer journeyed with his wife and her maid via the Rhine to Cologne and then to Antwerp, where he was well received and produced numerous drawings in silverpoint, chalk and charcoal.
